Publisher

My husband, Sean, and I published the first edition of Here I Stand in 2003. We created an LLC and named it Season Press. It was our first attempt at self-publishing, and we learned many terrifying lessons. We slated the book as part of a week-long musical celebration in Battle Creek, Michigan. Throughout the week, events such as a Sock Hop, panel discussions with musicians, and a college lecture highlighted local artists who had local, national, and international success.

The book was based on the oral history of interviews with musicians, their families, and local historians. We didn’t realize that we had never published a book, let alone on a deadline. The first edition was “special.” People loved it because there had never been a book on the local music history. However, it would take six more edits before it was a solid project we could truly be proud of.

In 2023, Willard Library partnered with the Battle Creek Heritage Museum for a Juneteenth celebration to recognize Battle Creek’s music history. Sean and I were there with the 20th Anniversary Edition of Here I Stand. The event was packed, and local musicians took part in sharing their stories.

Since 2003, Season Press LLC has assisted more than 200 local authors and organizations in self-publishing their own works. In addition, Season Press has conducted free self-publishing workshops throughout Michigan to inspire authors to share stories that entertain, inspire, and educate their audiences.

Community Voices Magazine

Girls Can! Magazine cover

The Merze Tate Explorers share their adventures in this Fall 2023 edition of Girls Can!

In 2010, James and Arlene Washington approached my husband, Sean, and I. They wanted to retire from publishing their bi-weekly newspaper called Community Voices. They asked if we could take it and add new life. We did. In 2010, we created an online version of Community Voices with news for West Michigan. In addition, we took the newspaper concept to a new level. We began Community Voices magazine.

Today, the magazine shares inspiring news of those in West Michigan. In addition, we partner with my Merze Tate Explorers travel writers organization to provide a platform for girls to share what they learn with the community. This free publication is offered online and in libraries, grocery stores, and other locations.
